What’s New This Quarter

Whether it’s mid-season or the build-up to the next big event, we’ve been heads down improving the platform. This quarter’s updates focus on keeping audiences better informed, giving ticket sales, marketing and operations teams sharper data, and helping visitors gain an exceptional experience and total confidence in finding their way to destinations, venues, and events.

Here’s what’s new…

Product Update

Disruption Alerts

Nobody wants to find out their train is cancelled while they’re already on the way to the station. The ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ travel assistant now displays real-time disruption alerts specific to each visitor’s journey.

When delays, cancellations, or service changes affect a visitor’s planned route, they’ll see clear warnings with relevant context. Alerts only appear when they’re actually relevant to that specific journey and travel date, so visitors aren’t overwhelmed with unnecessary information.

The result? Audiences who can plan ahead, adjust if needed, and arrive informed rather than flustered. One less thing for operations teams to manage on event day.

Product Update

Analytics: Access Routes Chart

It’s always been possible to see how people are travelling. Now it’s possible to see exactly where they’re heading once they arrive.

The dashboard now shows which specific access routes audiences are planning to use, which car park, which entrance, which drop-off zone.

For venues and events managing multiple access points, this is genuinely useful. Where to put signage, where to allocate staff, where the pinch points might be.

Less guesswork, better decisions.

Product Update

Enhanced Mapping Layer

Arriving somewhere new can be stressful, even with a travel plan in hand.

Alongside easy-to-use journey steps, we’ve introduced the ability to switch the travel assistant’s mapping layer to include enhanced 3D points of interest.

This helps audiences better recognise their surroundings as they approach an event, venue or destination, reducing uncertainty and improving confidence on arrival.
It’s a simple enhancement that makes a real difference to how visitors experience those final few minutes of their journey.

Client Support

Understanding Dashboard Data

The dashboard shows modal split percentages and carbon figures. But what do those numbers actually mean in practice?

Tom Yiangou, Client Development Manager, has written a guide on making dashboard data as valuable as possible, covering how to set realistic modal shift targets, compare events against national travel averages, measure which communications increase engagement, and turn data into carbon reduction evidence for sustainability reports.

Client Highlights

Recognising Our Clients and Community

A strong quarter for the YST community. Long-term client picked up not one but two awards, Responsible Business of the Year at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Awards and Sustainable Business of the Year at the Scottish Excellence Awards.

At , around 60% of participants generated travel plans, with our Head of ESI experiencing the event as a spectator to see the journey through visitors’ eyes.

We’ve also published our case study, exploring how 38,000 travel plans were created across Glasgow and Edinburgh Summer Sessions, with measurable behaviour change towards public transport and operational insights that shaped decisions on event day.

YST Team Updates

Growing the Team and Looking Ahead

We’re pleased to welcome Hannah George to the ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ team as Client Development Manager, joining Emma Gibbons and Tom Yiangou in Client Development. Hannah brings a background in sustainability strategy for live events and music venues.

The YST team now spans the UK, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, USA and Australia, and this quarter has been a busy one, with the team out on the road attending and speaking at industry events, visiting clients and experiencing events first-hand. As we move into the second half of the year, schedules are looking full for all the right reasons, with a packed calendar of client events, deployments and industry moments ahead.

Different cities, different time zones, same ambition.

What’s New This Quarter

2025 was an incredible year for ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’, with new partners, new product capabilities and more audiences supported to make smarter, more accessible travel choices. As we move through 2026, the momentum continues.

A quick look back at what the ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ platform delivered across 2025: 16,730,647 personalised travel plans delivered to audiences across the UK and beyond. | Support across thousands of destinations, venues and events. | Public transport emerging as the most selected travel option, accounting for 61.9% of planned journeys.

It’s great to see clear, accessible travel information supporting real journeys at scale. Here’s a look at what’s been happening this quarter.

Product Update

EnRoute: Turning the Journey Into Part of the Cultural Experience

‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ has launched EnRoute, a first-of-its-kind, content-driven travel innovation developed in partnership with Birmingham Hippodrome and delivered with Innovate UK through the DCMS Create Growth Programme.

EnRoute was created to bring travel, culture and sustainability closer together. Audience journeys account for the largest share of emissions at live events, yet they’re rarely treated as part of the experience itself. EnRoute rethinks this by linking personalised, low-carbon travel planning with creative digital content, making the journey an active part of how audiences engage.

Product Update

UTMB Configuration

‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ has developed a suite of new features to support Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB)’s hugely popular registration lottery, nudging participants towards low-carbon travel. The UTMB GO Travel Assistant incentivises trips that meet UTMB’s low-carbon business rules by offering a boost in the ballot and uses YST’s carbon calculations to help define each participant’s carbon offset.

With this configuration, YST is establishing the platform as the travel planning system for major ballot-based events, giving organisers a practical way to influence the carbon footprint of their audiences.

Product Update

Flights and Skyscanner Integration

At ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’, the platform always nudges users towards the lowest carbon travel options. Usually, that means not flying. However, sometimes it’s unavoidable, and where it is necessary, users should at least have up-to-date, real-time information.

The travel assistant is now connected with Skyscanner, presenting a live flight engine to offer users the latest and most convenient flights and schedules. This new development helps organisations capture a deeper layer of flight travel emissions data, while also giving them the opportunity to prioritise direct flights where international long-haul travel is inevitable.

Client Support

Making the Most of the Travel Assistant

Throughout the year, clear and well-timed communication has made a real difference in how audiences engage with travel information across tours, festivals, venues and destinations. Sharing the travel assistant early, whether on a website, in pre-event emails or via social channels, helps audiences plan their journey and know what to expect. The Client Development team is always happy to support, from advising on timing and messaging to sharing examples of what has worked well for others.

YST Team Updates

Out and About, Growing the Team and Looking Ahead

Over the last couple of months, the ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ team has been attending, speaking at and supporting more than 16 events across the live events, mobility, sport and sustainability sectors. From The Events Summit and National Modeshift Convention to Host City 2025 and SLUSH Helsinki, the team has been contributing to conversations around sustainable and accessible visitor travel and brilliant visitor experiences.

One of the highlights from this period was being named Best Loved by a Client at the MEI Gala Dinner during The Events Summit. A huge thank you to clients for the trust, collaboration and support.

We’re also pleased to welcome Szymon to the team as a Product Manager Degree Apprentice, supporting the product team across discovery, delivery and continuous improvement. The YST team continues to grow, and so does the ambition.

As 2026 gets underway, the focus remains on helping destinations, venues and events deliver smoother, more connected visitor experiences. For existing clients, regular data insights updates are on their way. For those discovering Ä¢¹½´«Ã½. for the first time, there’s no better moment to explore what personalised travel planning can do.

From Marathons and Music Festivals to Major Sporting Events

As the UK’s peak event season draws to a close, ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ is reflecting on a busy and exciting summer filled with innovation, collaboration, and smarter visitor journeys. From marathons and music festivals to major sporting events, our platform helped millions of visitors plan low-carbon, accessible routes, making travel part of the overall experience rather than a challenge to overcome.

Between March and September 2025, YST clients collectively delivered more than 9.5 million personalised travel plans, powering seamless travel for events including the London Marathon, The Great North Run, UTMB, Oasis at Heaton Park, and the Glasgow and Edinburgh Summer Sessions. Each deployment demonstrates how the ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ travel assistant enhances visitor experience, accessibility, and operational efficiency, while helping destinations measure and reduce Scope 3 emissions.

New Features & Improvements

Improved Mobile Experience

We’ve enhanced the travel assistant’s mobile interface to make journey planning more intuitive than ever.

Visitors can now swipe up to explore detailed route options or swipe down to reveal a fully interactive map view. This fluid, gesture-based navigation helps users switch effortlessly between journey choices and maps, delivering a naturally mobile-first experience that adapts to each traveller’s needs.

New Features & Improvements

Smarter Dashboard Access

New functionality in the YST dashboard now allows administrators to manage their team’s access directly.
Organisations can create and oversee multiple user accounts, giving colleagues insight into travel analytics and personalised planning tools across deployments.

These updates make it easier for destinations and event partners to collaborate around travel data – unlocking deeper insights into visitor behaviour and helping shape more efficient operations.

Spotlight on Our Clients

Clients Across This Year’s Industry Awards

We’re proud to see several of our partners recognised at this year’s industry awards.

Congratulations to London Marathon Events and partners for being shortlisted for Sustainable Spectator Travel Event of the Year at the , and to Transport for Greater Manchester and Oasis for their nomination in the same category.

These acknowledgements highlight how tailored travel planning can enhance accessibility, reduce emissions, and create more enjoyable experiences for audiences at scale.

YST Team Updates

A Year of Growth and Getting Together

It’s been an exciting period of growth at ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’

This quarter we welcomed Tabita Bobs and Gwen Evans as Sustainable Travel Consultants, and Miriam Huk as Marketing Manager, strengthening our focus on client engagement and communications.

We also celebrated Alex Townshend’s appointment as Head of Environmental & Socio-economic Impact, ensuring that sustainability and data-driven insight continue to sit at the heart of everything we do.

In September, the team came together for our annual Company Assembly in Edinburgh, a chance to connect in person, meet clients based in Scotland, and refocus on our shared mission. Alongside productive sessions at the , we even learned to play the bagpipes, an unforgettable highlight of an inspiring few days!

Looking Ahead

As we move into autumn, our focus remains on helping destinations, venues, and events deliver smoother, more connected visitor experiences. We’re continuing to refine how organisations plan, manage, and understand the journeys that shape each visit – making travel simpler, more accessible, and aligned with sustainability goals.

Existing clients can look forward to their next data insights update, sharing the latest analytics from recent deployments.

For those discovering ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ for the first time, it’s a great moment to explore how personalised travel planning can enhance operations and the visitor experience.

BIRMINGHAM, 25th JULY, 2025 – The West Midlands is set to demonstrate how autonomous vehicles could revolutionise the way people across the UK attend events.

The CAM4EVENTS feasibility study is one of 14 projects to have been awarded funding and support from the UK Government and industry through the Connected and Automated Mobility CAM Pathfinder Feasibility Studies (FS) Competition, delivered by Innovate UK and Zenzic.

Led by Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’ with support from Transport for West Midlands, Syselek and AJW Experience, the study will explore the viability of a business case for utilising connected and automated mobility (CAM) solutions to improve the way people get to popular event sites from public transport hubs.

The West Midlands has already been at the forefront of the UK’s CAM revolution, with Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry all hosting autonomous vehicle trials over recent years, and the CAM4EVENTS study aims to further cement the region’s reputation as a CAM powerhouse.

Over the next 11 months, the study will see the four organisations work collaboratively to develop an end-to-end service that integrates CAM event transportation directly into visitor ticket booking and travel planning systems. It will also explore whether such a service is commercially sustainable by evaluating market needs, technical feasibility and economic viability.

While many industries have already embraced automated vehicles, the organisations involved in the study see the potential of CAM solutions in event transport as being key to reducing congestion around venues, slashing carbon emissions and ensuring the long-term commercial success of events by improving the customer experience.

Chris Thompson, CEO at Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’, said:

“We’re passionate about making event travel more personalised, accessible, and sustainable. CAM4EVENTS will demonstrate how connected and autonomous mobility can enhance visitor experience whilst addressing pressing challenges around congestion and emissions.

“We’re bringing together expertise from across transport and events industries to integrate autonomous vehicle solutions into end-to-end journeys. Merging CAM technology directly into travel planning and ticketing will improve a vast range of trips and help the UK stay ahead in smart transport.

Matthew Shelton, Future Transport Services & Technology Lead at Transport West Midlands, said:

“Transport for West Midlands’ vision for CAM goes beyond just developing cutting-edge technology; it’s about delivering tangible benefits for our residents and visitors – reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and fundamentally enhancing the event experience.

Giles Fearnley, chair at AJW Experience Group, said: “We are thrilled to be contributing to this study which, taking learnings from experiences to date, has the opportunity to revolutionise the customer experience such that CAM solutions will play an ever-increasing role in event transportation.

Alan Walker, Manager at Syselek, said:

“We are excited to bring our deep technical expertise in Connected and Automated Mobility to this project. Our focus will be on the technical evaluation of current CAM platforms, ensuring that the selected technologies are operationally sound and commercially viable for the complexities of large-scale events. This project is a crucial step in pairing mature CAM technologies with real-world needs. We are confident that this study will help accelerate the integration of safe, efficient, and sustainable automated vehicle services into the UK’s vibrant events sector.

“This study, linking CAM solutions directly into event ticketing and travel planning, aligns perfectly with the strategic goals of the ITS World Congress coming to Birmingham in 2027. Hosting the Congress will provide an unparalleled platform to showcase our advancements, like CAM4EVENTS, to a global audience. It’s a chance to demonstrate how the West Midlands is not just a leader in CAM trials, but a living laboratory for integrating these innovations into a truly smart, sustainable, and accessible transport network.â€

The Feasibility Studies (FS) Competition is part of the £150million CAM Pathfinder programme which was announced in the Government’s long-awaited Industrial Strategy.

The UK Government sees a thriving CAM ecosystem as being key to driving innovation and helping it realise its ambition of creating a £40bn CAM sector and over 6,500 jobs in the industry by 2040.

Mark Cracknell, Programme Director at Zenzic, said:

“We are thrilled to announce the CAM4EVENTS project, spearheaded by Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’ with support from Transport for West Midlands, Syselek and AJW Experience, as one of the fourteen innovative CAM Pathfinder Feasibility Studies underway across the UK.

“The deployment of Connected and Automated Mobility solutions in the events industry holds incredible promise – enhancing accessibility, reducing congestion and emissions, and improving the overall visitor experience. The CAM4EVENTS project will serve as a pivotal example in showcasing those benefits.

“We are looking forward to working with the project consortia as they further develop their business case, demonstrate the commercial readiness of the service, and provide vital insight into the opportunities presented by the deployment of CAM solutions in regions throughout the UK.

Maximise Engagement this Event Season

With Event Season upon us, ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ has introduced new functionality and dashboard features to maximise visitor engagement and simplify the generation and sending of personalised travel plans. Take the time to learn about the features we’ve developed to deliver brilliant sustainable visitor experiences.

Map Features: White Labelling

We are very proud of the ‘You. Smart. thing.’ Travel Assistant, but we’re not overly precious. In fact, we have several fully-white labeled deployments where visitors would think that the Travel Assistant has been built by the event organiser, not us!

We have an impressive range of white label features, from rebranding the header and footer with a client’s brand colours, font, logo and hyperlinks to customising the domain name. Want do deploy a Travel Assistant with a more personal touch?

Multi-Lingual Travel Assistants

To allow our increasingly international audience to use the travel assistant, we have translated the user interface into three languages – French, Spanish and Italian.

UTMB is a world-renowned ultra-marathon that loops around Mount Blanc. The UTMB Go travel assistant includes a multi-lingual panel in the header that allows race participants to select their language of choice (EN, ES, FR, IT). Instead of spending time translating directions, participants can focus on their race plan!

If your audience would benefit from a multi-lingual travel assistant, book a demo to discuss options.

Generate Travel Plans

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance our service and platform, we have recently refreshed the ‘Generate Travel Plan’ functionality in the dashboard.

Using the intuitive template on the ‘Generate Travel Plan’ dashboard page clients can more easily generate and send personalised travel plans to visitors.

We encourage clients to use the YST dashboard as regularly as they can, in order to get the most out of the data generated by travel assistant deployment.

Big Green Coach x Travel Assistant

We’re excited to announce our integration with Big Green Coach, now live in the TfGM x Oasis Travel Assistant – just in time for fans heading to see Oasis at Heaton Park.

The Travel Assistant helps fans plan viable and sustainable journeys to events. Where regular options are limited, we introduce smart alternatives, like shuttles commissioned by event organisers or coach/taxi services. As the event’s official coach partner, Big Green Coach offers hassle-free, carbon-neutral travel, now fully integrated into the YST platform.

Together, we’re making event travel greener and easier than ever.

Already a YST client? Look out for your Data Analytics Email!

Thank you for choosing ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ to support your commitment to delivering brilliant, sustainable visitor experiences.

As part of our ongoing support, we have started sending regular account updates, highlighting the latest insights and analytics from your deployment.

Reach out to your Client Development Manager if you want to be one of the first accounts to receive insights data created using data extracted from the Dashboard Analytics Suite.

Raising the bar for smarter, more sustainable travel.

2025 is already proving to be a landmark year for ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’. We’re proud to be rolling out a series of impactful updates across our Dashboard and travel assistant, focused on security, usability, and climate-conscious travel. These improvements are part of our ongoing commitment to deliver seamless, data-driven experiences to all of our clients.

Here’s a roundup of what’s new and what’s next:

Strengthened Dashboard Security: Multi-Factor Authentication

To enhance data protection for all users, we’ve introduced multi-factor authentication (MFA) across our dashboard. Now, when you log in to review travel data or make updates to your deployment, you’ll be prompted to authenticate via email the first time.

This is a key milestone in our ongoing security efforts—ensuring your data is protected while making the platform more robust for all stakeholders.

Tip: The more you use your Dashboard, the more value you’ll unlock from your travel assistant’s insights.

UI Enhancement: COâ‚‚e Emissions in Focus

Understanding your journey’s carbon footprint has never been clearer. We’ve redesigned the travel assistant interface to feature COâ‚‚e (carbon footprint equivalent) values prominently—now displayed in colour just beneath the time and calorie data.

This visual shift supports better decision-making by highlighting the environmental impact of travel options and nudging users toward lower-carbon modes of transport.

Small UI changes. Big impact for the planet.

Map Update: Dotted Walk Routes

Navigation just got smarter. Walking segments in multi-modal journeys are now displayed as dotted lines within the travel assistant, helping users clearly distinguish them from other transport modes.

Whether you’re heading to the Eden Project or a local venue, this change helps ensure the journey is easy to follow, especially where walking picks up from cycling or other modes. Plus, with the new “Open journey steps in maps button, you can now launch your preferred mapping app to guide you turn-by-turn.

Featured Blog: The Tour de France and Hidden Carbon Costs

Is the world’s most iconic cycling race really as green as it seems?

In our latest blog, we explore the paradox of “low-carbonâ€ sports by diving into the Tour de France—revealing how major events can carry hidden environmental costs. We also discuss how ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ is uniquely positioned to help address these challenges

The Client Development Team Continues to Expand

Is The Client Development Team is growing! We’re thrilled to welcome Alex Townshend—who’s no stranger to many of our clients.

After rotating through Commercial and Product teams as part of her Graduate Scheme, Alex now brings her insight and experience to Client Development.

We’re delighted to see her journey come full circle and are excited for what lies ahead.

Improving Rural Transport in Warwickshire

As part of our commitment to inclusive and connected travel, we’ve been working on the Rural Transport Accelerator Project—an initiative funded by the Connected Places Catapult. This project focuses on enhancing rural connectivityin partnership with the NHS Trust in Warwickshire.

By identifying the barriers that rural populations face in accessing healthcare and essential services, the project explores innovative ways to bridge transport gaps through smarter, user-focused journey planning. From integrating more accessible multi-modal options to tailoring the travel assistant’s functionality for underserved areas, we’re learning how technology can close the mobility divide.

Helping rural communities travel smarter—and live better.

New Features, Fresh Faces & Sustainable Travel Innovation

As we step into 2025, all of us at ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ want to take a moment to wish you a joyful and successful New Year. Reflecting on our collaborations throughout 2024, we’re proud of the progress made toward more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive travel experiences—and we’re even more excited about what lies ahead.

Meet Your New Client Development Team

To kick things off, we’re thrilled to introduce our new Client Development Team, formed to give you more dedicated, responsive, and expert support. The team will be your go-to for everything related to your travel assistant deployment.

Whether it’s feature requests, troubleshooting, or collaboration on new ideas, they’ve got you covered. Together, they’re here to help you make the most of our platform – ensuring your travel solutions deliver measurable impact, every step of the way.

Emma Gibbons, an accomplished Project Manager with a strong background in the arts and education, is leading the team.

Tom Yiangou, who brings expertise in sustainable transport engagement, having worked with several UK local authorities.

New Feature Spotlight: Uber + Public Transport Integration

We’ve partnered with Uber to introduce a smart, seamless new feature: direct booking from within travel plans. This enhancement is particularly valuable in areas with limited public transport availability or for journeys requiring first-mile/last-mile solutions.

The system intelligently suggests multi-modal travel options, combining rideshare services with public transport like buses, rail, or park & ride. This not only improves accessibility but also helps guide users toward more sustainable transport choices.

UI Enhancements for a Better User Experience

We’ve polished up the travel assistant interface to make journey information clearer and more actionable. Descriptions of journey options now appear above their icons, making it easier for users to understand routes and travel behaviour nudges.

Bonus: Promotional hyperlinks are now more prominent—boosting engagement and click-throughs.

Smarter Filtering on the Map

Our map filter tools just got more powerful. Located on the right-hand side of the travel assistant interface, these filters allow users to view specific travel layers such as:

  • Road closures

  • Service disruptions

  • EV charging stations

  • Parking locations

  • Taxi ranks

Tailor the map display to suit your event or venue’s needs, helping visitors plan better and travel smarter.

Success Story: London Marathon Events

One of the highlights of 2024 was our work with London Marathon Events (LME). At the Vitality 10,000, our platform played a key role in helping reduce the environmental impact of participant travel.

Building on this momentum, we’re proud to announce that LME will be expanding their use of our travel assistant across all their 2025 events. This marks a significant step forward in sustainable mass participation event management.

Mobility? As Part of What Service?

Understanding the future of transport means looking beyond roads and vehicles—it’s about integrated, people-first services that improve local experiences and reduce environmental impact.

At Ä¢¹½´«Ã½., we’re helping public sector partners embed mobility into their broader service delivery strategies—whether it’s for tourism, events, education, or public health—so that every journey becomes a smart, sustainable one.

Watch our latest overview video to see how we’re shaping the future of low-carbon travel across the UK.

onboard:earth is the new name for ‘ecolibrium’

New name and brand announced by the live events industry charity founded to inspire low-carbon travel and fund environmental restoration.

is the new name for the UK live industry charity inspiring change on travel, the largest source of emissions in the in the live events industry. The new name and brand better reflects its mission to ‘move low-carbon travel into the heart of live event culture’ and its aim to unite the whole sector in raising funds for environmental restoration.

Founding festival members of the industry-founded charity include; Shambala, Boomtown and Kendal Calling, and to date they have worked with 160 live industry organisations, including 2000Trees, Greenman, End of the Road, Sunbelt Rentals, Universal Music, EMI, TheTicketSellers, Big Green Coach, Tracsis Events, and ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ Members have collectively raised over £659,000 for environmental restoration project partners

“This industry-founded charity was created to share insights on how to reduce travel emissions, and build resources. The move to onboard:earth represents a new energy to tackle the climate crisis, and shift towards working with more partners that focus on regeneration of ecosystems, and represents a commitment to acting urgently,  as we expand the team and resources we offer.

Chris Johnson, CEO of onboard:earth

The charity’s onward journey involves new collaboration with industry partners to develop online travel carbon measurement and reporting tools with greater scope and accuracy.  The environmental restoration programmes funded by onboard:earth members will continue to go beyond carbon offsetting, recognising the climate crisis as a social and political problem, as well as an environmental one and working with a wider range of community-benefit projects.  Updated communication guidance will support a wider diversity of events to confidently share the positive impact of donations raised for people and nature and engage their networks in positive behaviour change and climate action.

“Sometimes it’s hard to see the wood for the trees, when it comes to making a difference to a global-scale issue, and it’s even harder to know where to start. What we’ve carved out with onboard:earth is a straightforward way for events and attendees to come together and have an impact bigger than the sum of their parts.

To date, the charity has already funded the protection of an area of rainforest 32-times the size of Kendal Calling Festival and funded the planting of 65,000 trees, and we are only just getting started!

We invite festivals and partners to jump onboard as we continue this journey together and support our ecosystems to flourish for generations to come.”

The ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ (YST) carbon removals option facilitates the purchase of carbon removal credits to neutralise emissions from travel.

YST aims to encourage eventgoers and participants to choose active, low-carbon travel options that reduce travel-related CO2e emissions, with the ability to remove their remaining carbon footprint from the atmosphere.

First used by London Marathon Events (LME) for the Vitality 10k 2024, the sustainable ‘travel assistant’ service aims to improve participant experience and accessibility while encouraging low-carbon travel choices. YST’s integration of the carbon removal option allows race participants to easily purchase carbon removal credits that will neutralise remaining emissions associated with their travel to and from the event.

Climate action requires urgent efforts to reduce emissions and remove existing carbon from the atmosphere. YST’s travel demand management technology supports this by encouraging sustainable travel behaviour and offering users the option to remove carbon using durable removal methods offered through the travel assistant service.

The main goal is to prevent or reduce emissions, but to reach net zero by 2050, an estimated 10 billion tonnes of carbon will need to be removed from the atmosphere each year.

Creating carbon-removed events

YST is proud to collaborate with events of all shapes and sizes, including London Marathon Events, the world’s leading organiser of mass participation sporting events. LME is internationally recognised for its efforts to inspire activity and deliver excellence, encouraging participation in sport across all demographics and abilities:

“We recognise that the activities of London Marathon Events Limited can have both a negative and a beneficial impact on the environment, associated with impacts such as resource utilisation, materials choice, waste generation and disposal, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and nature preservation, and releases to land, water and air. Through a rigorous assessment and measurement of what those impacts are, we are taking action to eliminate or minimise negative ones and amplify positive ones.

Kate Chapman, Head of Sustainability, LME

Working towards net zero carbon emissions

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides robust scientific data and pathways to net zero, stressing that achieving global net zero by 2050 is crucial for limiting warming to 1.5°C, while highlighting the need for equitable climate action across the globe.

To achieve net zero, organisations and individuals must focus on:

  1. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Implementing strategies such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and supply chain management. Emission reduction initiatives are critical to any net zero strategy.
  2. Removing Unavoidable Emissions: For emissions that cannot be fully reduced, like those from bus, rail, or international air travel, purchasing durable carbon removal credits helps neutralise the remaining impact.

Many organisations recognise the importance of carbon removal to neutralise their operational impact. Historically, LME have charged a travelling from abroad to address travel-related carbon emissions with funds raised invested in durable carbon removal, but until now, domestic participants have not had the option to address their emissions.

Since September 2024, YST has begun introducing carbon removal integration for all destinations, venues, and events using its platform to manage visitor travel data. The system calculates an individual’s travel carbon footprint using the UK government’s CO2e emissions formula, ensuring an accurate contribution based on the distance, route, and modes of travel selected.

Where does the money go?

A diverse carbon removals portfolio managed by , comprising:

Enhanced Rock Weathering

Accelerating natural process where rainwater and carbon dioxide reacts with silicate rocks to form a stable form of carbon in solution. This solution then travels via the rivers to the ocean where it remains stable for millennia. Enhanced weathering accelerates this process by using rock ground into dust, which is then spread on agricultural land.

Direct Air Capture

Removes carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, typically using chemical processes that bind COâ‚‚ from the air. The captured COâ‚‚ can then be stored underground or used in various industrial applications.

Afforestation

Planting trees to either restore or develop new regions of forested land, increasing the drawdown of CO2 through natural respiration. These projects may also have significant environmental co-benefits such as air quality and biodiversity improvement.

Soil carbon sequestration

Enhancing agricultural soils’ ability to draw down carbon in both organic and inorganic forms. Soils are the second-largest carbon storage system on the planet, holding approximately 2,500 billion tonnes of carbon.

Biochar

Turning biomass, such as agricultural waste, into a stable form of carbon-rich charcoal through a process called pyrolysis. Pyrolysis heats the biomass in the absence of oxygen, which prevents it from fully combusting and instead turns it into biochar. This stores carbon for hundreds to thousands of years, while also forming a material which helps improve soil health.

These technologies require substantial investment to scale and provide viable solutions for achieving net zero. However, carbon removal is no substitute for reducing emissions. Both reductions and removals must be pursued simultaneously. The climate emergency demands action on all fronts.

Example Deployment (London Marathon Events)

  1. Create a travel plan
  2. Select a journey option
  3. Click on the CO2e amount and you will be directed to a checkout page with the carbon removal option pre-populated

How ‘Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.’ is guiding Manchester to sustainability and beyond

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’ has been selected to supply Transport for Greater Manchester with next generation multi-modal travel planning technology. Its aim is to support Mayor Andy Burnham’s vision for an integrated London-style transport system, that inspires regional regeneration by making it easier to get around by bus, tram, train, walking, wheeling, or cycling.

Manchester aspires to be the easiest place in the UK to live and work whilst becoming net zero. This means looking beyond sustainability, to a regenerative economy that the breathes life into society and the planet, much like the worker bee – Manchester’s enduring emblem and mascot for over 150 years.

Incorporating bespoke deployments for Manchester’s iconic football clubs, venues such as the newly opened Co-op Live arena, plus major events like Manchester Pride, the regional smart travel partnership ensures that the interests of visitors, venues, events and transport operators are fully aligned.

Transport is currently the largest contributor to the UK’s overall carbon footprint, at around 25%, with major events contributing a disproportionately to transit-based emissions, typically due to the average distance travelled. Combined with renewable energy sources, and reducing waste, cutting greenhouse gas emissions generated by transport has the potential to help rebalance climate change whilst having a transformative effect on regional economies.

Launched in September 2023 to coincide with Transport for Greater Manchester (“TfGM) bringing the city-region’s buses under local control via franchising, the Bee Network journey planner was initially delivered as an embedded element of TfGM’s customer-facing website and transport strategy. It is seen as a key component of what TfGM managing director, Steve Warrener, describes as:

“A truly integrated, affordable, accessible and inclusive transport network that will provide excellent public transport and active travel choices for all; promoting sustainable travel behavioural change through integrated spatial, digital and transport planning; and supporting the electrification of vehicles and public transport fleets.

In March 2024 the service also became available within the TfGM’s Bee Network mobile app – an additional retail channel for bus tickets across the network, with commuter rail integrated by 2030. As part of this programme of work several enhancements have already been made the feature rich Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’ platform and travel assistant service, which is also used by venues and events across the UK to provide low-carbon travel plans to visitors. Bee Network updates include real-time bus times and fares, park and ride options, TfGM dock-to-dock cycle journey planning, and using cycling as a first and last mile option on journeys that include public transport.

Whilst the service includes driving options, travel behaviour from over 300,000 anonymous journey plans captured in the run up to Christmas 2023 showed usage heavily skewed towards people planning public transport journeys (~56%), with over 34% planning walking and cycling trips.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½«Ã½.’ CEO, Chris Thompson explains:

“We are working to deliver the next generation of travel planning technology. Rather than simply looking for the shortest path YST’s eco-algorithm is designed to load-balance transport networks against socio-economic objectives that catalyse economic regeneration.

In layman’s terms this means that whilst it provides quick routes across the city, the Bee Network journey planner recommends the lowest-carbon travel options first. For people travelling in and around Manchester this could mean avoiding congestion in favour of cleaner, greener, and ultimately more productive travel choices that improve access to economic opportunity. Commenting on this significant contract win for the UK-based green travel tech. platform, Thompson adds:

“YST’s experience of providing tailored, sustainable multi-modal travel planning solutions to local authorities, venues, and events is perfectly aligned with TfGM’s vision for the Bee Network across the Greater Manchester Combined Authority region. We look forward to helping TfGM continue to deliver a network which is simple to use, which supports seamless end-to-end journeys, and which delivers decarbonisation by helping people get real value from travelling as sustainably as possible.

Editors Notes

The quote from Steve Warrener is taken from his .

About TfGM & The BEE Network

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is a local government body responsible for co-ordinating transport services throughout Greater Manchester in North West England. It is an executive arm of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), the city region’s administrative authority. The strategies and policies of Transport for Greater Manchester are set by the GMCA and its Greater Manchester Transport Committee (GMTC). The committee is made up of 33 councillors appointed from the ten Greater Manchester boroughs (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan), as well as the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

TfGM owns Metrolink – the United Kingdom’s largest light rail network – which is operated and maintained under contract by a Keolis/Amey consortium. TfGM also owns Greater Manchester’s Cycle Hire scheme, and is responsible for cycling and walking infrastructure. TfGM owns and maintains bus stations, stops & shelters, however bus services are deregulated in Great Britain outside London. Following the passing of the Bus Services Act 2017, Greater Manchester became the first city-region to start the process of bus franchising, returning bus services to public control. TfGM does not control National Rail services or infrastructure in Greater Manchester.

TfGM is responsible for developing the BEE Network, an integrated transport network for Greater Manchester. The BEE Network is proposed to include a single transport livery, integrated fares & ticketing, and a fare cap across tram, bus, cycling, walking, and eventually suburban rail. By 2025, Metrolink trams, franchised buses services, and cycle hire are planned to be integrated. Negotiations with central government are ongoing for some commuter rail services to join the network, starting from 2025.
